We here at Colortone love coming up with new and delightful ways to help our partners inform, inspire and engage their attendees. But while we strive to take on new opportunities, it’s always important to remember how far we have come. Thus comes a new series: the Colortone Corner — where we look at our past work to see how it can inspire even greater events… maybe even yours!
Our first entry for the Colortone Corner comes from the 2019 CodeMash conference. For this software and programming conference, one of our event producers worked closely with the organizers to bring their message to life with a stunning and large-scale set piece. This humongous computer was a massive success and drew a lot of attention and buzz from all who attended the conference.

Our Event Producer wanted to create a large set piece out of foam to match the theme of the event: CodeMash 2000. With that year and number ringing through the office, and knowing that the client adored old-school computers, they pitched the idea 7-8 months before the event of making a large recreation of a Tandy2000.
The client adored the concept, and ready to make some modem magic happen, we went onto…
Preparing to create this old-school set piece took a lot of careful communication with the client and the whole Colortone team. Our CAD Operator and primary set creator collaborated on the design with our event producer. Transporting the massive design wasn’t a problem: With our in-house hotwire cutting capabilities, the team broke this large design down into more manageable pieces so it could be easily moved and built at the venue.
Two months before the event, Colortone began building in earnest. The team began cutting out the foam components, experimenting with different ways to “boot up” this computer in a way that was beautiful yet efficient. To make things easier on both logistics and the client’s budget, Colortone handled everything from painting to plastering in-house. One of the most interesting features of this piece was the use of Colortone’s own LED in tandem with custom content. A computer set wouldn’t be convincing without a bright screen to go with it, and we used these resources to bring the computer’s massive screen to life, allowing it to be used throughout the event in presentations.
CodeMash 2000 was a resounding success, with our fabricated set piece integral to the vibrant energy of this event.
From beginning to end, Colortone’s primary focus was enabling CodeMash to inspire and engage their attendees with a stunning set- providing excellent service and clear communication as we made this massive set piece with minimal hassle.
